These are the unforgettable words of Greg Papa, the beloved, iconic voice of Bay Area sports for the 49ers, Raiders, Warriors, Giants, and A's. After decades of bringing fans unforgettable sports memories, Greg is now in the fight of his life against Acute Lymphoblastic B-cell Leukemia (ALL).
Greg has stepped away from the broadcast booth to undergo a life-saving stem cell transplant at UCSF. The long hospital stay and months of recovery will create an overwhelming financial burden. We want Greg's focus to be on his comeback, not on his bills.
The Challenge: Saving a Life Comes with Enormous Costs
Greg is fortunate that both of his siblings are perfect bone marrow transplant matches, but the financial reality of this journey is overwhelming. The critical transplant process requires a week of conditioning therapy before the transplant and an inpatient hospital stay of 30 days, followed by a three to six-month period involving close outpatient monitoring. The total recovery can last several years.
Even with insurance, the uncovered medical and recovery costs exceed what most individuals can afford. Greg will be unable to work during this time. Funds from this campaign will go directly toward Greg's medical treatment and recovery expenses, including:
• Medical deductibles, co-pays, and co-insurance related to the transplant procedure
• Non-covered medications and post-transplant care
• Essential recovery and living expenses while Greg is unable to work
